The Washington Redskins are asking for the return of a historic pennant stolen from atop RFK Stadium during Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The pennant, which the team estimated to be 60 years old, was lent to the Redskins by Aubrey Mahyew to help celebrate the team’s final game at RFK. It was taken from a flagpole on top of the stadium. The triangular pennant is burgundy with a white Redskin logo in the middle.

Mahyew, a longtime employee at RFK Stadium, was given the pennant by his father, who worked for the Redskins for 36 years. The pennant had flown at Griffith Stadium and DC Stadium and was given to the elder Mahyew by original Redskin owner George Preston Marshall. It has been in their family for more then 40 years.

The Redskins said the pennant’s “historic and emotional attachment to the Mahyew family is great,” and are asking that it be returned. The team said it wouldn’t ask questions.

The Redskins are moving to a new stadium in Landover, Maryland, next year after 35 years at RFK.
