Work on 2 Reservoirs to Begin Next Year

Adding to its busy construction schedule, South Gate is gearing up to build two 1.8-million-gallon reservoirs atop an abandoned parking lot.

The project is expected to begin early next year and is estimated to cost $3.4 million, nearly all of which will be paid through federal and county funds.

Before building can begin, an empty lot off Tweedy Boulevard in the western portion of the city needs environmental mitigation work. It was once the site of a gasoline station, and city officials say the soil is contaminated.

Meanwhile, South Gate officials are weighing repair of the city’s deteriorating sewer system. Although the extent of the sewer problems is only now being determined, construction supervisors are optimistic that much of the system can be fixed over the next year, perhaps by installing a corrosion-resistant lining.

Unlike the reservoir work, repairs to the 60-year-old sewer system could cost residents extra. City officials have proposed a $10-million municipal bond to fix about a third of the 90-mile system.
