Rose Parade Express Makes Trial Run From Claremont

In what could be a signal that a daily commuter train is only a few years away on the route, Metrolink’s first Rose Parade express made a trial run Thursday from Claremont to Arcadia, and seats are selling fast for the New Year’s Day rail ride.

As the 130-ton locomotive and three double-decker cars pulled into a temporary station in Arcadia on Thursday, where passengers on Jan. 1 will board shuttle buses to the parade, Metrolink officials said fewer than 200 of 1,000 tickets available for the express remain.

On New Year’s Day, the train will leave San Bernardino at 5:17 a.m., stopping at Rialto, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Montclair and Claremont before arriving an hour later in Arcadia, where the tracks end.

“This is a line we want to run every day, not just special days,” said Judy Wright, Metrolink board member and Claremont city councilwoman. The commuter train would connect to the light-rail line planned from Los Angeles to Pasadena, she said.
