Terrell Davis has gone from obscure running back at Georgia to rookie sensation to Associated Press NFL offensive player of the year in only two years.

Davis, the Denver Broncos’ sixth-round choice in the 1995 draft who rushed for 1,538 yards this season, edged Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre, last year’s winner, in balloting by a nationwide panel of 93 sportswriters. Davis received 36 1/2 votes to 34 for Favre.

Arizona defensive end Simeon Rice, who tied the rookie record of 12 1/2 sacks, was a runaway winner as the AP defensive rookie of the year. Rice, the No. 3 pick in the draft, got 60 votes to 16 for Miami linebacker Zach Thomas.
