Welcoming in New Year With Arts Festival
Hermosa Beach is gearing up for the third annual FirstNIGHT celebration, billed as the biggest New Year’s Eve arts festival the beach city has hosted. Forty-five performances and 200 artists are scheduled.
FirstNIGHT originated in Boston in 1976 as a celebration of local artists. The alcohol-free event has spread to more than 100 communities nationwide.
As the 5:30 p.m.-to-midnight event nears, Arts Hermosa, a nonprofit arts organization and sponsor, is preparing to sell more than 10,000 admittance buttons. Restaurants, streets and community centers will be turned into stages for entertainment ranging from Irish modern dance to flamenco.
In addition, the family event offers activities for children, including face painting, puppet and mask making. Other activities include resolution writing and storytelling. The event will conclude with a procession of giant puppets during the countdown to 1997.
Shuttle buses will provide transportation to parking areas at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Streets will be closed. Admittance buttons cost $10 if purchased in advance, $12 the night of the event.
