Rambayan Helps Boost Orange Coast

Orange Coast’s Arlyn Rambayan drew a foul with less than one second remaining then made both foul shots to lift Orange Coast over American River, 62-61, in a first-round game at the San Jose women’s basketball tournament Friday in San Jose.

Former Newport Harbor standout Diane Pulido scored 28 points and teammate Traci Nakamura had 15 points for Orange Coast (12-3).

In the first round of the Fullerton tournament:

Fullerton 88, Napa Valley 53--Nadia Hoerner had 20 points and five blocked shots, and Paula Flores scored 14 points for the Hornets, who had six players in double figures. Fullerton forced 32 turnovers and shot 49% from the field.

Irvine Valley 75, Antelope Valley 57--Irvine Valley’s Jamie Broneer had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Mary Jo Pennington scored 14 points for Irvine Valley.

In a nonconference game:

Cypress 81, Moorpark 57--Linda Rodriguez scored 29 points, making 12 of 20 shots from the field for host Cypress (12-4), which posted its fifth consecutive victory.

Rodriguez made five three-pointers and had eight rebounds and five assists for the Chargers, who shot 53% from the field. Janine Shaw had 19 points and Holly Pawlowski had 13 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Chargers.

In the Los Angeles City men’s basketball tournament:

Fullerton 77, Yavapai (Ariz.) 70--Brian Montonati had 23 points and eight rebounds and Sterling Rachel had 14 points and nine rebounds for Fullerton (6-8).

Bernard Rock scored 15 points for Yavapai (8-3).

In the Rancho Santiago Tournament:

Rancho Santiago 77, Palomar 60--Lohnnie Tape had 23 points and eight rebounds for Rancho Santiago (9-4) in a first-round victory. Vladimir Nieto had 17 points and his brother, Andres, scored 15 points for the Dons.

Saddleback given a bye-- Saddleback’s first-round game against Skagit Valley (Wash.) was canceled Friday because Skagit Valley was unable to leave Washington state because of heavy snow.
