Marine-minded motorists have until Wednesday to order a proposed California license plate intended to raise money for the state’s coastline.

California’s “Whale Tail” license plate, whose proceeds would raise funds for coastal cleanup and education, will not be issued unless 5,000 plates are ordered by the end of New Year’s Day. About 4,000 plates had been ordered by Sunday night.

Many people bought the plates by telephone as Christmas gifts, said Judi Shils, a spokeswoman for the state Coastal Commission, which is sponsoring the plate.

Last-minute incentives to heighten interest in the plate include a pledge by the American Plastics Council and Universal Studios to underwrite half the $50 price of a regular “Whale Tail” plate, making the cost $25. Plates can be ordered through New Year’s Day by phoning (800) 262-7848.
