Yale Co-Op Loses Lease at University

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Forsaking tradition, Yale University will replace a bookstore that has served the campus for more than a century with a Barnes & Noble store that promises more books, longer hours and a spiffier look.

The Yale Co-op, founded by university instructors and students in 1885, has been at its current location since the 1960s. Its president, Harry Berkowitz, promised to find a new site for the store after its Yale lease expires in June.

Yale is seeking to lure more people to the city by bringing in brand-name stores. Barnes & Noble will become the anchor tenant of a strip of stores in the Broadway district, which separates Yale from an impoverished section of the city.
