Nelson Is Steady but Waves Trip

The new setter looked at ease and Pepperdine was racking up the kills.

But the Waves fell to the University of Alberta (Canada), 16-14, 3-15, 15-13, 15-17, 16-14, Thursday in a round-robin match of the Pepperdine Tournament.

George Roumain had 38 kills and Kevin Barnett added 21 for the Waves.

Kurt Nelson had 82 assists in his first match since transferring to Pepperdine from UCLA.

The Waves recovered for a night match and beat San Diego State, 15-6, 15-11, 15-7.

Pepperdine plays No. 8 Long Beach State in the tournament Saturday night.


Chaffey 62, Antelope Valley College 56--The Panthers (8-10, 2-0) went on a 24-4 run in the last 13 minutes and won their 59th consecutive Foothill Conference game.

Chanel Edwards and Stacey Hartwell each scored 14 points for Antelope Valley.

Pepperdine 71, San Diego 41--Angie White scored 12 points for the Waves (9-4, 1-0) in their West Coast Conference opener.

Montana State 70, Cal State Northridge 49--Lisa Vaillancourt scored 13 points for the Matadors (3-10, 1-2) but they were routed in a Big Sky Conference game at Northridge.


UC Santa Cruz 73, Cal Lutheran 65--The Kingsmen (8-3) blew a 10-point lead to the Banana Slugs (5-6) at Cal Lutheran.

Oxnard 81, Glendale 79--Shawn Hackett missed a 12-footer from the baseline with 16 seconds left and the Condors (8-12) held on in a Western State Conference interdivisional game at Oxnard.

Terrell Davis had 26 points for Oxnard and Leland Mayes had 20.
