Kids’ Books Sought for Reading Program

Share

A Los Angeles Mission College volunteer group is collecting used children’s books as part of a new program that promotes reading among elementary school students.

The Circle K International Club of Mission College, a 15-member student group affiliated with local Kiwanis clubs, is asking the public to drop off old children’s books at one of several campus locations.

Volunteers from Circle K will read the books to students at Hubbard Street Elementary School and circulate books to other schools in the area, said club President Jesus Ochoa, who is organizing the project.

“I don’t have children of my own, but I have nephews and I know how much they enjoy it when I read to them,” said Ochoa. “That motivated me to get this program going.”

Club members are also working to raise money for Mission’s child-care center.

A raffle will be held in late January for two prime parking spaces in the faculty parking lot that club members secured from the campus administration. Tickets cost $3. The two winning students will be allowed to park in the spaces for the semester, Ochoa said.

Drop-off sites for used children’s books include the campus police station and the veterans’ and foreign students’ offices at Mission College.
