Barnaby’s Hits Count

Share

Matthew Barnaby did enough damage in the first 59 minutes 54 seconds to overcome the wicked elbow he received at the end of the game.

Barnaby scored one goal and set up another to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-1 victory over Dallas, stopping the Stars’ four-game winning streak. Barnaby’s goal with 5:23 remaining put Dallas away.

The scrappy forward was knocked silly with 5.3 seconds remaining after receiving an elbow to the face from Todd Harvey. Barnaby was on the ice for several minutes before pointing to the scoreboard on his way off the ice--reminding the Stars who won the game.

“The coach sent [Harvey] out to do something,” Barnaby said. “From the bottom of my heart, I know he sent him out to do that job. That kind of stuff isn’t tolerable. It’s just no class. I pointed to the scoreboard, we got the two points, and that’s all that matters. We got the last laugh.”

New Jersey 3, Toronto 3--A rare third-period rally to get a point isn’t going to completely turn around Toronto at this point. But it could be a start.

Todd Warriner scored the tying goal early in the third period and Marcel Cousineau made 35 saves as the slumping Maple Leafs skated to a tie at New Jersey.

The tie was the first of the season for Toronto, the only team in the NHL that did not have one. The comeback also marked the first time this season the Maple Leafs got a point after being behind after two periods--they had been 0-20-0.

“We’ll take any point right now,” Mats Sundin said. “This point was big for us. It could be the difference down to the wire.”

Edmonton 1, N.Y. Islanders 0--Curtis Joseph earned his sixth shutout of the season and Dean McAmmond scored the only goal as the Oilers avenged their worst loss of the season by edging the visiting Islanders. Joseph, who is tied for the league lead with six shutouts, blocked 24 shots for his second shutout of the month.
