Council May Vote on 1.1-Acre Dog Park

Final approval for the city’s first park for dogs could be granted by the City Council tonight.

The council has been asked to use the 1.1-acre site at Street of the Golden Lantern and Chapparosa Park for canines.

Mayor Patricia C. Bates said she wants the Dedicated Animal Welfare Group, a local animal organization that has supported creating the park, to help keep an eye on its users.

“I’d like to see them take some oversight role,” Bates said. “They could help enforce a code of behavior. We have that with our sports fields, why not with the dog park?”

The park was backed by the Planning Commission on Jan. 14. There was no public opposition, and several residents spoke in favor of the project.
