African Art Exhibit at Cal Lutheran
Masks and traditional African tribal art will be featured at a free exhibit at Cal Lutheran University’s Pearson Library from Sunday to Feb. 22. in celebration of African American History Month.
Originating from several West African countries, the masks and sculptures are on loan from San Fernando Valley residents James and Kathy Gulbranson, who have collected artwork from the continent for more than 20 years.
Masks and depictions of animals and people, such as those on display at Cal Lutheran, were an inspiration to 20th century painters, including Pablo Picasso and German Expressionist Emil Nolde.
The exhibit will be open during normal library hours: Sundays from 1 p.m. to midnight; Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to midnight; Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cal Lutheran, at 60 W. Olsen Road, will also celebrate African American History Month with a free concert by the Ventura County Mass Choir on Monday at 8 p.m. in the university’s Samuelson Chapel.
