Pepperdine’s Wolf Fetches 1st Win for Sanchez
Randy Wolf scattered eight hits over eight innings to propel Pepperdine to its first victory under Coach Frank Sanchez, a 5-1 decision over California in a nonconference game Friday in Berkeley.
Wolf (1-0), a former El Camino Real High left-hander, struck out eight and walked two. Rob Reid had three hits and drove in a run for the Waves (1-4).
In other baseball games:
CS Northridge 9, Sacramento State 8--Andy Wilson singled to score Terrmel Sledge with two out in the 12th inning to break an 8-8 tie and cap a comeback in a round-robin game of the Sacramento State tournament.
Gary Stephenson (1-0) allowed one run and three hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief for Northridge (6-1-1).
The Matadors scored three runs in the ninth to force extra innings.
Pierce 13, L.A. City 6--Kirk Mayer hit a three-run home run for Pierce (1-3) in a Western State Conference tournament game at Pierce. Tony Montiel had three hits for the Brahmas.
Canyons 9, East L.A. 5--Robbie Rehfeld had three hits, including a grand slam in the eighth inning for Canyons (5-1) in a WSC tournament game at Canyons.
Ventura 10, Imperial Valley, 4--The Pirates (3-0) won the Mt. San Antonio tournament game behind four hits by Andy Super. Earlier, Dustin Tubb scattered four hits and struck out 15 to lead Ventura to a 6-0 victory over Victor Valley.
Glendale 10, Oxnard 8--Freddy Sanchez hit a home run and a double and Brett Niles had two doubles for Glendale in a Porterville tournament game.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Master’s 74, UC San Diego 57--Kim DeVries scored 21 points and Laura Fralich had 18 points and 10 assists to lead the Mustangs (15-10) past UCSD (13-5) in a nonconference game at Master’s.
