Inmate Awaiting Trial Is Stabbed
An inmate awaiting trial on murder charges was stabbed during a gang-related fight at the Pitchess jail, sheriff’s deputies said Monday.
Salvador Granados, 26, of Los Angeles was stabbed several times in the stomach and lower back by other inmates Sunday night. He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery, Deputy Bob Killeen said.
The Sheriff’s Department has not arrested anyone in the stabbing, but the weapon used--a “shank” or illicit handmade prison knife--was recovered and deputies are interviewing three inmate suspects.
Granados was arrested by Los Angeles police on murder charges Aug. 23 and was being held for a court appearance.
A hospital spokeswoman said Granados was still recovering Monday, but would not disclose his condition.
