Yellowstone Bison Roundup Resumes

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Yellowstone National Park officials said they resumed capturing bison at the northern edge of the park because heavy snows forced too many into the area in search of food. Bison carry brucellosis, a disease that if spread to cattle can cause spontaneous abortion. Some 700 bison have been sent to slaughterhouses under a program to keep them out of grazing areas in Montana. Two weeks ago the park stopped capturing the bison and instead tried chasing them back into the park. As their numbers rose it became increasingly difficult to move them, park officials said.
