Royal High Athletic Director Terry Dobbins said Wednesday that an alleged racial incident last Friday involving boys’ junior varsity soccer Coach Kenny Byrd has been resolved.

Byrd, who is African-American, told Dobbins he was the target of racial insults by Thousand Oaks junior varsity players after a match at Royal.

“Kenny feels that there were some things that happened to him in the handshake line after that game,” Dobbins said. “He felt he was not treated in a professional manner.”

Byrd, who has been a walk-on coach at Royal for eight years, met with Thousand Oaks officials Wednesday morning, Dobbins said.

“They addressed the situation and Kenny feels it’s settled,” Dobbins said.

Neither Byrd nor Thousand Oaks Athletic Director Jim O’Brien returned calls.

Coaching move: Former Alemany High football Coach Pat Degnan has joined the Littlerock staff as an assistant. Degnan resigned in January after four seasons at Alemany.

Swimmer sixth: Matt Carter, a senior at Buena High, placed sixth in the 800-meter freestyle, the opening event of the Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships in Buffalo, N.Y.

Carter finished in 8:21.54, more than 12 seconds behind winner Tim Siciliano of San Marcos.

Crespi loss: Bharat Sahgal, a standout junior forward on the Crespi High boys’ soccer team, is academically ineligible, Coach Rob Kodama said.
