A 69-year-old Port Hueneme woman died Thursday of injuries suffered in a head-on collision on California 126 two days earlier, authorities said.

Britta Jeppeson died in Santa Paula Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit, where she had been a patient since Tuesday’s midday crash, said Senior Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac. An autopsy will be performed today.

Jeppeson was traveling eastbound on California 126 west of Piru near Hopper Canyon Road in an area known locally as “Blood Alley” when her car drifted into the opposite lane and struck an oncoming car, Isaac said.

Her death is the first on the notoriously dangerous highway since Jan. 11, when two Ventura County men died in an accident that brought the number of fatalities there to 11 in five weeks.

The mounting death toll prompted authorities to establish a traffic-safety campaign on the highway that includes lower speed limits in two construction zones east of Fillmore.
