Drawing up plans for a new elementary school in Olinda Heights will be the topic of a study session Tuesday at the Brea Olinda Unified School District’s board meeting.

Supt. Peggy Lynch said the district’s seventh elementary school is tentatively set to open in spring 1999.

The discussion will focus on how to choose a committee to direct the school’s design and how to select someone to oversee the process, Lynch said.

Trustee Susie Sokol said the session will be the first dedicated to planning for the new school, which will accommodate students from the planned Olinda Heights housing project on Carbon Canyon Road. No action will be taken at the study session, she said.

Separately, trustees will review a report on Brea Canyon High School’s alternative calendar. The school is proposing a schedule that would give students a one-week break between six-week sessions of school.

Principal Bob Phelps said the calendar could reduce student burnout and set aside time for staff development.

The study session starts at 7:15 p.m. at Brea Civic Center, 1 Civic Center Circle.
