The San Jose Sharks were fined $7,500 and the Vancouver Canucks $2,500 because of a brawl in the closing seconds of a Jan. 27 game in Vancouver.

“The San Jose club received the larger fine because two of its players attempted to precipitate further altercations in the area of the Vancouver bench following an initial altercation between a player from each club,” the league said in a statement.

With eight seconds left in the game, which Vancouver won, 5-2, the Canucks’ Donald Brashear fought Dody Wood. At the same time, the Sharks’ Owen Nolan was assessed roughing and misconduct penalties, and San Jose’s Bernie Nicholls and Esa Tikkanen got misconducts. Three seconds after play resumed, San Jose captain Todd Gill went after Vancouver’s Chris Joseph. Both got fighting majors and Gill was ejected.

The NHL fined Hartford Whaler right wing Kelly Chase $1,000 for comments he made regarding the work of referee Kelly Fraser following a Feb. 8 loss to the Canadiens at Montreal.

“Kerry Fraser should be embarrassed by the job he did tonight,” Chase said. “If I get fined, he should also pay a fine.”
