Stanford Gets Back on Track

Stanford returned home to get back on the road to recovery in the Pacific 10 Conference basketball race.

Brevin Knight and Peter Sauer each scored 16 points and No. 22 Stanford remained undefeated at Maples Pavilion at 8-0 with an 83-61 victory over Oregon Saturday night.

Stanford, 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the Pacific 10, had lost three consecutive games to fall from second place to fifth before defeating Oregon State, 87-54, at home Thursday night. The Cardinal travels to the Pacific Northwest to play Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Saturday.

“We don’t need any more wake-up calls. We’ve had our wake-up calls,” said guard Arthur Lee, who had 15 points. “Now we need to go to Washington and take what we’ve done at home up there.”

Knight also had eight assists and became the second player in the Pacific 10 to get both 1,500 points and 700 assists. Oregon State’s Gary Payton is the other.

Kenya Wilkins had 24 points for Oregon (14-8, 5-8), which started the season 10-0. No other Oregon player scored in double figures.

California 90, Oregon State 68--Ed Gray scored 25 points in 23 minutes, his 11th consecutive game with 20 or more, as the Golden Bears (18-6, 9-4) won their 17th in a row at Harmon Gym.

Oregon State (6-16, 2-11) shot 25.7% and lost its 18th consecutive road game.

California held Oregon State to one basket over the first seven minutes to take a 19-3 lead. Freshman Sean Jackson made two three-point shots, his first points of the season, during a 25-7 run that gave the Golden Bears a 49-25 lead at halftime.

Washington 91, Washington State 70--At Seattle, Todd MacCulloch had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies (14-7, 7-5) to the highest-scoring victory over the Cougars (11-13, 3-9) in the last 46 games between the schools.

Washington was a 103-70 winner in Pullman on Feb. 1, 1975. The Huskies also got their first two-game sweep of the Cougars since 1990.

Washington had five other players score between nine and 15 points and had a 42-23 rebounding advantage.

Isaac Fontaine and Carlos Daniel each had 17 points for Washington State.

WOMEN

No. 3 Stanford 69, Oregon 66--Kate Starbird scored 30 points as the Cardinal (25-1, 13-0) defeated the Ducks (16-6, 9-4) for the 20th consecutive time and stretched its Pacific 10 win streak to 40.
