Woman, 63, Killed Crossing Street
A 63-year-old Oxnard woman who had just walked her grandson to a school bus stop died after being struck by a sport-utility vehicle Wednesday morning at the intersection of Hill and J streets.
Apparently blinded by the sun, a 17-year-old Santa Clara High School student struck Helen Calderon Martinez after first stopping at a stop sign, said Senior Officer Don Mulville, traffic coordinator for the Oxnard Police Department. Martinez was in the crosswalk on J Street.
“He didn’t see the pedestrian because of the sun and a windshield that probably wasn’t as clean as it should have been,” Mulville said.
Martinez died of multiple blunt force injuries after the 7:30 a.m. accident, said Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac.
No charges have been filed against the young man, whose name was withheld because of his age.
The investigation into the accident--including a reenactment of the driving conditions--could take a week, Mulville said.
