He’ll Have Room for ‘Marvin’ Now

Oscar-winning actor ROBERT DE NIRO is leasing a Brentwood house at $30,000 a month, sources say. “It’s only for a couple of months,” a source said.

De Niro participated in the recent tribute to director Martin Scorsese, who received the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. De Niro and Scorsese have worked together on eight films.

De Niro is co-producing the thriller “Affirmative Action,” which is in development. The film is about an LAPD detective assigned to investigate inner-city killings involving conservative extremists.

De Niro, 53, appeared in the 1996 films “Marvin’s Room,” which he also produced; “Sleepers,” and “The Fan.”

He won Oscars as best actor in “Raging Bull” (1980) and as best supporting actor in “The Godfather Part II” (1974). He co-stars with Sylvester Stallone in the film “Copland,” due out this summer.

The Brentwood house that De Niro is leasing was built in the 1940s and has five bedrooms and six baths in about 5,500 square feet. It also has a two-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot guest house, which rents for $8,000 a month, sources say.

The main house has been described as having “great, big wooden gates and a massive lawn.” “It’s probably the most private property in the world, with a big wall and a long driveway,” a source said.

The last time De Niro spent much time in Los Angeles was in 1995, when he leased the Beverly Hills-area home of actor Roger Moore. Actress Candice Bergen subsequently bought that house. De Niro lives in New York.

The longtime Century City home of movie legend LANA TURNER has come on the market at $379,000. The 20th-floor condo, which she owned for more than 20 years, was one of Turner’s last homes when she died at age 75 in June 1995.

Turner starred in more than 50 films and was a favorite as a pinup of GIs during World War II. She won acclaim in “Ziegfeld Girl” (1941) and earned an Oscar nomination for her role in “Peyton Place” (1957).

The condo has two bedrooms and two baths in about 1,400 square feet. It is one of nearly 500 units in a two-building complex built in 1966.

“Ms. Turner always asked guests to take off their shoes when entering the white carpeted condominium, and her estate has asked that prospective buyers honor that tradition,” a source said.

ANTHONY EDWARDS, who plays Dr. Mark Greene on the NBC series “ER,” has sold his Los Feliz home of several years for its $565,000 asking price, sources say. He already had bought another home nearby, sources added.

The house he sold was built in 1930 and has four bedrooms and three baths in about 3,000 square feet. The Mediterranean-style house has a pool and mountain views.

Edwards, 34, co-starred in the 1996 CBS miniseries “In Cold Blood.” He has been in a number of movies, including “The Client” (1994), “Pet Semetary Two” (1992), “Mr. North” (1988) and “Top Gun” (1986), in which he appeared as Goose, Tom Cruise’s navigator.

Edwards, 34, is married to makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, whom he met on the set of “Pet Semetary.”

Elizabeth Klock of Elizabeth Klock & Associates represented Edwards in the sale, and Trevor Thomas of Fred Sands’ Hollywood Hills office represented the buyers, a local couple, other sources said.

Actor ROY THINNES and his actress wife, CATHERINE SMYTHE, have sold their Hollywood Hills pied-a-terre to actress-model DARA TOMANOVICH for just under its $399,000 asking price, sources say.

Tomanovich, who was in the movie “Bio-Dome” (1996) and will appear in the upcoming HBO movie “Back in Business,” made an offer on the house after it had been listed for only four days, a source said. Escrow closed last week.

Thinnes has had a number of starring and recurring roles in “The Invaders,” “General Hospital,” “One Life to Live” and “The X-Files,” in which he played healer Jeremiah Smith in the season finale last spring. Thinnes reappeared as Smith in “The X-Files” last fall, accompanying agent Mulder (David Duchovny) to Canada.

Thinnes, 60, has been doing a lot of work in New York as well as in Los Angeles, and so he and his wife and their two children plan to move between the cities, perhaps to Memphis, where Smythe has a business, a source said.

The couple owned the Hollywood Hills home since 1991. It was built in 1963, but Thinnes and Smythe refurbished it, turning one of the three bedrooms into an office or den.

The couple also installed a new kitchen, marble bath, French doors opening to the gardens and a water purification system, a source said. The house is just under 2,000 square feet.
