Cal State Fullerton Defeats San Diego in Baseball, 6-3

Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed in a 6-3 nonconference baseball victory over San Diego at Titan Field on Saturday.

San Diego (6-8) tied the score, 3-3, in the sixth inning, but the Titans scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

Mike Lamb had a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored to lead Fullerton (11-8).

Mike Greenlee (3-0) picked up the victory in 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out four.

In nonconference baseball:

Concordia 11-4, The Master’s 9-2--In the first game, Matt Broesamle, a Costa Mesa High graduate, had two hits and two RBIs for Concordia (8-10). In the second game Brian Kallemeyn (2-1) pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits.

Tennessee 10, Long Beach State 5--Keith Cowley hit two home runs and drove in three RBIs for Long Beach State (6-9).

Chapman 4, UC San Diego 0--Allen Martinez, Jason Moeller and Bryan Lounsbury had RBIs in a four-run sixth inning for Chapman (6-3). Jim Brewer (2-0) pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and striking out four for the Panthers.

In Big West conference women’s basketball:

Nevada 68, Cal State Fullerton 60--Kristen Sigg scored 20 for Cal State Fullerton (10-16, 5-10).

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Concordia 74, Biola 66--Angela Sather had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead Concordia (26-5, 11-1). Heather Carll had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Eagles.

In Golden State Athletic conference men’s basketball:

Westmont 94, Southern California College 85--Justin McIntee scored 27 points but the Vanguards (21-10, 8-6) lost their regular-season finale at Westmont. SCC has lost three consecutive conference games.

Biola 80, Concordia 57--Concordia (13-16, 6-8) had its two game-winning streak ended by second-place Biola (26-4, 11-3). Jamie Jaquez scored 13 for Concordia.

In the UC Santa Barbara softball tournament:

Long Beach State 7, Iowa State 2--Amanda Adams was two for three with two doubles and four RBIs for Long Beach State (16-5). In an earlier game, Long Beach State defeated Akron (1-2), 7-1.

In the Big West swimming and diving championships:

Former Irvine High swimmer dominates--Irvine High graduate and current UC Santa Barbara swimmer Jason Lezak was named Big West swimmer of the year. Lezak set a meet record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.68 seconds, bettering the mark of 43.88 set in 1984 by Pepperdine’s Peter Rhode. Lezak was a three-time winner at the championships, winning the 100 butterfly in 49.19 and the 50 freestyle in 19.89.

The UC Irvine men finished second, the highest finish since 1989 when the Anteaters also finished second. The Anteaters finished with 420 points, 20 ahead of third-place Pacific. UC Santa Barbara won with 616.

UC Irvine’s Arika Earley swept the women’s diving titles, winning the three-meter event with a score of 382.80.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Hawaii d. UC Irvine, 15-4, 15-12, 15-5--Chris Harger had a team-high 12 kills for UC Irvine (3-9, 2-7). Jason Ring had 16 kills to lead Hawaii (8-6, 6-5).

Stanford d. Long Beach State, 15-3, 15-2, 15-7--Olympian Mike Lambert collected 16 kills to lead third-ranked Stanford (9-2, 7-2). Gaby Amar posted 15 kills to lead 10th-ranked Long Beach State (10-5, 5-5).
