Fire Hurts 23 People, Leaves 153 Homeless

Apartment-dwellers leaped from windows when a predawn arson fire swept through a three-story inner-city complex in Indianapolis. At least 23 people were hospitalized and 153 left homeless. Residents dropped children from windows into the arms of firefighters and raced along hallways just ahead of the fire, pounding on doors to wake neighbors, witnesses said. Nine of the 23 injured people were discharged from the hospital after treatment, officials said. Investigators said the fire was set.
