The Young and the Restless Causing a Stir

Since Aaron Spelling’s latest soap opera “Sunset Beach” started in January, the show’s two youngest stars--Randy Spelling and Adrienne Frantz--have been causing all kinds of trouble in the world of daytime drama.

Producer Aaron Spelling’s son, Randy, plays Sean Richards, a screwed-up rich kid recently expelled from boarding school for sneaking out with the headmaster’s daughter.

“Sean got kicked out of school so now he’s just really involved with his family and his family is screwed up. His mom drinks and his dad drives her to drink and he’s caught in the middle,” Randy Spelling says.

The 18-year-old made his acting debut with a bit part on his father’s nighttime soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which also stars his older sister, Tori Spelling. He liked it so much that he began taking acting lessons and landed a role on “Malibu Shores.” But the show soon washed away, so the young Spelling returned to “Beverly Hills, 90210” as the troublemaking stepbrother of character Steve Sanders.

He says his character on “Sunset Beach” is different than any of his previous roles.

“It’s a straight character. I mean in the sense that all of the other roles were comedy. This is a very serious, straight role,” he explains.

Since the success rate of new daytime soaps can be quite low, Randy Spelling is keeping his future plans flexible.

“I want to keep all of my options open. I’m learning so much from the show. But I would like to do writing for movies, TV shows, whatever. And I want to direct. I want to do everything. I’m pretty creative.”

Playing Randy Spelling’s latest love interest on the soap is Frantz, an 18-year-old New Yorker new to the soap opera scene. She describes her character, 17-year-old Tiffany Thorne, as “a homeless runaway who came from an abusive family. She doesn’t trust anybody. And she’s always looking for love in all the wrong places, going after people for their money and stuff.”

“She’s kind of back-stabbing. She’s like a vixen in training, playing off her sweet image.”

Frantz was snatched out of her freshman year at Marymount Manhattan College in New York last fall to join “Sunset Beach.” She now lives in a studio apartment in Burbank, spending her little free time writing screenplays.

“I’d eventually like to go back to school for directing. Eventually make my screenplays into movies,” she says.

Her dream acting job would be “to do a time-period piece with Val Kilmer. He’s my favorite actor.”

So, will Sean and Tiffany stay together despite interference from Sean’s disapproving dad? Will Sean give up his mom as a murderer? Tune in tomorrow for the next episode of “Sunset Beach.”
