Mary J. Coulthard, a well-known volunteer in Ventura, died Tuesday following a long illness. She was 84.
Born in South Dakota, Coulthard grew up in Minnesota. In 1941, she married her husband, Francis, and the couple had three children. The family moved to Ventura in 1964, where Coulthard worked in retail sales until her retirement in 1978.
Coulthard used her free time to volunteer for several organizations, including a singing group and Community Memorial Hospital. Her son, David Coulthard of Ventura, remembers his mother as “a gentle spirit ready to assist in many ways.”
In addition to her son, Coulthard is survived by daughters Margaret Pobywajlo of Bedford, N. H., and Patty Dewey of Hillsborough, N. C.; a sister, Margaret Blackford of Ventura, and three grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Saticoy at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott Crockett Mortuary, Santa Barbara.
