UC Irvine Signs Three Men’s Soccer Players

The UC Irvine men’s soccer team has signed three players, the school announced Tuesday.

Richard Elley, a goalkeeper from Gilbert (Ariz.) High, Kenny Simmons, a midfielder from El Dorado, and Walter Camargo, a midfielder from Mater Dei, will play for Irvine next year.

Elley was the East Sky Region most valuable player last season and a two-time first-team pick. Simmons was named the Empire League most valuable player last season. Camargo was a three-time All-South Coast League pick.

The women’s volleyball team at UC Irvine has signed two players, Teri Zartman and Brooke Witt.

Zartman is a setter from Torrance Bishop Montgomery. She is a three-time All-Southern Section selection.

Witt is an outside hitter from Bakersfield Centennial. She helped Centennial win the state Division I title last season.

Dennis Paulson, a Nike Tour pro and graduate of Costa Mesa High, won a Simple Green/Pacific Golf Tour event Monday at Los Coyotes Country Club.

Paulson shot five-under-par 67 and won $1,100. He finished three strokes ahead of Perry Parker of Dana Point, Remi Bouchard of Canada and Bob Lasken of Long Beach.

The Zodiac kicks off its inaugural soccer season against the Galaxy of Major League Soccer at 7:30 p.m. March 15 at Santa Ana Stadium, its home field.

The Zodiac, an A-League affiliate of the Galaxy, will play 14 regular-season home games, beginning April 20 against the El Paso Patriots.
