Basketball

Steen, a freshman from Chino Hills Ayala High, spent much of this season as the designated shooter off the bench. But with the recent dismissal of two players, he has become a starter, and took full advantage of the opportunity Friday in a first-round playoff game against Long Beach. He scored a season-high 32 points, including making eight of 12 three-pointers, as the Hornets won, 89-86, in overtime.

* Rancho Santiago, sophomore. He had five hits, including a three-run home run, as Rancho Santiago beat Orange Coast, 15-4, Saturday.

Holly Pawlowski

Cypress, Sophomore

Basketball

Pawlowski, a center from Pacifica High, had a successful first season at Cypress even though the team didn’t. She averaged a team-best 15 points a game and was selected co-most valuable player even though Cypress finished 7-22. This season, Pawlowski is averaging a point less, but Cypress is 22-8, including beating San Diego Mesa, 59-50, Saturday in the first round of the playoffs. Pawlowski had 24 points and six rebounds in the game.

* Sophomore, Orange Coast. She scored 16 points and got six assists as the Pirates beat Grossmont, 93-48.
