Detectives with the Santa Paula Police Department are searching for a 16-year-old boy whom they suspect shot at a man and another youth Saturday night.

The pair--a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old--were driving down 12th Street about 8:20 p.m. when they noticed the suspect, said Sgt. Gary Marshall, a police detective.

They thought they recognized the suspect and turned the car around to talk to him, but when they drew close, the youth yelled a gang slogan and opened fire with a handgun, Marshall said.

The 21-year-old driver was hit in the back, but only slightly injured. The 16-year-old was not hit, but had numerous bullet holes in his baggy pants and a “burn where a bullet just missed him,” Marshall said.

The two were treated at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital and released Saturday night. Their names were withheld for their protection, Marshall said.
