Parker Resigns as Moorpark Basketball Coach

Share

Del Parker resigned as men’s basketball coach at Moorpark College, the school announced Wednesday.

Parker had a 28-33 record in two seasons as head coach.

He was an associate coach to Al Nordquist since 1969 and took over the Raiders when Nordquist resigned in 1995 to become a dean at the school.

Kicking in: Brian Walker, an All-Western State Conference punter from Bakersfield College, said he will sign to play football at Cal State Northridge.

Walker, who is 6 feet, 165 pounds, chose Northridge over Eastern Kentucky.

Walker, who also kicks, fills one of the Matadors’ gaping holes. Only Joe LaFirenza, a senior last fall, punted for Northridge in the last two seasons, and there were no viable candidates to replace him.

Walker will be the 20th player to sign since Coach Jim Fenwick took over in January.

Young and restless: Dmitri Young, a rookie first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals from Rio Mesa High, is the highest-rated area product listed on Baseball America’s list of the Top 100 prospects. He is No. 29.

Right-handed pitcher Jeff Suppan of the Boston Red Sox, formerly of Crespi High, is ranked No. 60 and first baseman Brad Fullmer of the Montreal Expos, formerly of Montclair Prep, is ranked No. 65.

Jose Cruz Jr., a member of the Class-A Lancaster JetHawks in the Seattle Mariners’ farm system last season, is ranked No. 12.
