Hearst, Moon Get New Teams

Free-agent running back Garrison Hearst, last year’s leading rusher for the Cincinnati Bengals, signed a two-year, $2.8-million contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday.

“I’ve played for two teams who haven’t done well in the postseason, but now I get a chance to play in some playoff games,” said Hearst, who had also been negotiating with Arizona and San Diego.

Veteran free-agent quarterback Warren Moon, 41, agreed to a two-year, $1.65-million contract with the Seattle Seahawks to become a backup to John Friesz. Moon, the MVP in the 1978 Rose Bowl for the Washington Huskies, spurned the San Diego Chargers and his friend, Coach Kevin Gilbride, Moon’s offensive coordinator in Houston for four seasons. . . . The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent kicker Chris Boniol to an offer sheet, reportedly a four-year deal worth $2.5 million. The Dallas Cowboys have a week to match.

Track and Field

Wilson Kipketer, a native of Kenya living in Denmark, broke the world indoor record in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute 43.96 seconds at the World Track Championships in Paris. Kipketer broke the record of 1:44.84, set by his former Kenyan teammate, Paul Ereng, in 1989 in Budapest, Hungary.

Two-time Olympic champion Gail Devers won her second world indoor 60-meter title in 7.06.

Mebrahtom Keflezighi of UCLA won the men’s 5,000 meters in 13:52.72 at the NCAA indoor meet in Indianapolis. Amy Skieresz of Arizona, formerly of Agoura High, won the women’s 5,000 in 15:39.75. UCLA’s Michael Granville failed to qualify for the 800 final.

The International Olympic Committee pared down a record field of 11 candidates for host city of the 2004 Summer Olympics by selecting Athens, Buenos Aires, Stockholm, Rome and Cape Town, South Africa, as finalists. The winner will be named Sept. 5.

Golf

Greg Norman, trying for his fourth victory in eight years in the Doral-Ryder Open in Miami, and David Duval, trying for his first tour title, shared the lead at 10-under-par 134 after 36 holes. Nick Price was a stroke behind the leaders after a 67.

Motor Racing

Robby Gordon won the pole for Sunday’s Primestar 500 Winston Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway by breaking the track qualifying record with a lap of 186.507 mph. . . . Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, expected to challenge for the Formula One title, won the pole position for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne.

Miscellany

Jason Couch leads the Pro Bowlers Assn.’s $300,000 AC Delco Classic at Lakewood’s Cal Bowl after Friday’s final match-play round. Parker Bohn III, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber and Mike Aulby will join Couch and play for the $48,000 top-prize in today’s championship at noon. . . . Washington State, which was considering moving its Aug. 30 football game with UCLA to Seattle’s Kingdome, decided to play all six of its home games in Pullman. . . . Australia’s Mark Philippoussis slammed a record 142-mph serve at Zimbabwe’s Byron Black en route to a 7-5, 6-3, quarterfinal victory in the Franklin Templeton Classic at Scottsdale, Ariz. . . .
