Fly In and Tune in to Your E-Mail

Why just dash to the phone booth while waiting for a plane when you can dash to an Internet station and check out your e-mail, too? That’s now possible at the San Francisco and Dallas-Fort Worth airports, and it may soon be possible at LAX.

In San Francisco, three kiosks holding a total of 10 notebook computers with Internet access have been installed on a trial basis by Berkeley-based QuickATM near three United gates in the north termnal. GTE is trying out Internet stations at Dallas-Fort Worth.

In San Francisco, Internet users also have access to QuickATM’s data base on airports and airline schedules. The service is now free, but firm President Howard Zack said that in a few months his company plans to begin charging about $12 an hour for Internet use.

In Los Angeles, Kelly Wong of the city’s Department of Airports said last week that LAX officials are talking with QuickATM about a similar trial program.
