U.S. Grant to Aid Waterfront Projects

The Oxnard Harbor District and city of Port Hueneme have received a $2.3-million federal grant to make utility, road and other basic infrastructure improvements to 33 acres of surplus military land that the two entities are expected to assume ownership of later this month.

The land will be used to expand the 65-acre port, establish a five-acre municipal business park for breeding of commercial seafood, and in the long term provide greater public access to the waterfront.

“The rebuilding of this Navy property will be extremely expensive,” said Jesse Ramirez, president of the board of harbor commissioners.

“We thank the federal government for reducing some of those costs through this award.”

The estimated cost for the total improvements needed is slightly more than $3 million.

In addition to the $2.3-million Department of Commerce grant, the state is providing $300,000 toward the development, leaving the port responsible for about $370,000 and the city $100,000.

The city may use $150,000 provided by the port when the transfer becomes official.

A transfer ceremony is tentatively scheduled for March 25.
