WEST REGIONAL

* No. 1 Minnesota (27-3) vs. No. 16 Southwest Texas State (16-12)--Standout guard Bobby Jackson, the Gophers’ depth and ferocious press keyed five victories this season by 30 or more points, and there’s no reason to believe that the Bobcats can survive that kind of heat. Southwest Texas State, 4-12 away from its home court this season, lost to Troy State by 32, to Tulsa by 16 and to McNeese State by 17.

* No. 8 Mississippi (20-8) vs. No. 9 Temple (19-10)--The selection committee sure didn’t give Ole Miss an easy one as it tries for its first tournament victory. Forward Ansu Sesay, who averages 14.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, was the first Rebel picked for the All-Southeastern Conference team since 1992. Temple Coach John Chaney is famous for his high-profile upsets, and while the Rebels have had a great season, many good ones have gone up in smoke against the Owl matchup zone.

* No. 5 Tulsa (23-9) vs. No. 12 Boston University (25-4)--The Golden Hurricane has the guard--trigger-happy Shea Seals--and Boston U. has the big man--Tunji Awojobi, a major inside-outside force. But Tulsa won too big many games this year (UCLA, Oklahoma and Temple) to figure a loss against Boston, whose four losses were to George Washington, Texas Christian, Rhode Island and Drexel.

* No. 4 Clemson (21-9) vs. No. 13 Miami of Ohio (21-8)--You’ve got to go through do-everything Devin Davis (16.8 points, 9.1 rebounds) to beat Miami, and the Redskins have a nice NCAA history --knocking off No. 5-seeded Arizona as a No. 12-seeded team two years ago. But the Clemson defense should be good enough to give Coach Rick Barnes his first tournament victory.
