Fogler Won’t Talk About Coaching Job at Rutgers

South Carolina Coach Eddie Fogler, who has changed jobs three times in 11 years, would not say Thursday if he is interested in the Rutgers vacancy.

Rutgers has asked Mike McGee, South Carolina’s athletic director, for permission to speak to Fogler, who has a five-year contract that pays him about $490,000 a year.

Fogler said he would answer questions only about South Carolina’s game, but later defended coaches who recruit athletes for one school and then leave for another, saying it was a “corporate world.”

Hugh Durham, who led two schools to the Final Four but was fired two years ago by Georgia, was named coach at Jacksonville.

Durham, who has a career record of 528-311, takes over a Jacksonville team coming off the worst season (5-23) in school history. Coach George Scholz was fired during the season after players, citing verbal abuse, threatened to boycott.

Durham, 59, took Florida State to the 1972 NCAA final, where it lost to UCLA, and got Georgia to the Final Four in 1983. He was fired after 17 seasons at Georgia in 1995 and filed two formal grievances which were settled out of court for a reported $500,000.

Tennessee Chattanooga offered Coach Mack McCarthy a five-year contract extension.
