It’s a Big Night for Mullen, but Avalanche Beats Penguins

Joe Sakic’s hat trick spoiled a milestone goal by Joey Mullen as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-3, Friday night at Denver.

Colorado scored twice within 21 seconds of the third period, overshadowing Mullen’s 500th career goal.

Mullen, a native of New York City, became the first American-born player to score 500 goals and the 25th in league history.

New York Rangers 4, Ottawa 3--Niklas Sundstrom scored 1:24 into overtime to give the Rangers the victory at Ottawa.

The Rangers were without forward Luc Robitaille, who was sidelined indefinitely after breaking a bone in his left foot as he got off the team bus before a morning practice.

Dallas 4, Chicago 4--Mike Modano scored twice, including the tying goal with 3:37 left in regulation to give the Stars the tie at Dallas.

Chicago has 66 points and moved into sole possession of the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.

Phoenix 4, San Jose 1--Jeremy Roenick scored one goal and assisted on another while while Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 26 shots to lead the Coyotes at San Jose.
