Andreychuk Gets 500th Goal as Devils Win, 3-2

From Associated Press

Dave Andreychuk scored his 500th NHL goal and the New Jersey Devils extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday at East Rutherford, N.J.

Doug Gilmour and Valeri Zelepukin also scored for the Devils.

New Jersey has won nine of 10 games since the Feb. 25 trade that brought Gilmour and Dave Ellett to New Jersey from Toronto. They are 9-0-6 in their last 15 home games.

Andreychuk scored on a power play at 9:03 of the first period. He became the 26th player to score 500 NHL goals, going into the crease to backhand a rebound of Bill Guerin’s shot past goaltender Bill Ranford. “Every time I stepped on the ice, I was thinking about that,” Andreychuk said. “I look at the list and it’s hard to believe my name is on that list. There’s some great names on the list.”

Buffalo 7, Philadelphia 5--Brian Holzinger scored two goals and Michael Peca had a goal and two assists, and the Sabres won at Philadelphia despite being outshot 44-20.

It was a rough outing for Flyers goalie Ron Hextall, who faced seven shots and gave up four goals before getting pulled 11 minutes into the game.

Steve Shields, starting in place of Dominik Hasek, made 39 saves.

Boston 5, New York Islanders 2--Rookie Anson Carter’s goal broke a scoreless tie in the second period and the Bruins won at Boston.

Carter has scored three goals in six games since coming to Boston in a multi-player deal that sent Adam Oates to Washington on March 1.

Carter swept a pass from Jeff Odgers past goalie Tommy Salo at 3:57 of the second period while he was lying flat on the ice.

Edmonton 4, Hartford 2--Goalie Curtis Joseph stopped 43 shots and Jason Arnott scored the winning goal at Hartford.

Joseph, who made 19 saves in the second period, gave up power-play goals to Steve Chiasson and Geoff Sanderson.

Vancouver 5, Tampa Bay 2--At Tampa, Brian Noonan scored two goals and added an assist and the Canucks ended a seven-game winless streak.

Vancouver had not won since Feb. 27, going 0-5-2.

Toronto 3, Florida 3--In their first meeting against Toronto in 16 months, the Panthers recorded their league-leading 16th tie at Miami. Scott Mellanby scored his 100th goal as a Panther and the Maple Leafs’ Larry Murphy came through with a late power-play goal.

The last time these teams played was Nov. 14, 1995--a 5-2 Panthers’ win.

Ottawa 2, Montreal 2--Rookie Bruce Gardiner scored 8:34 into the third period to give the Senators a tie at Montreal.

Gardiner’s seventh goal came 28 seconds after Marc Bureau had given the Canadiens a 2-1 lead. The Senators are unbeaten in four games with Montreal this season (2-0-2).

Detroit 7, San Jose 4--Sergei Fedorov scored two goals to lead the Red Wings at San Jose.
