TODAY’S GAMES

* No. 1 Minnesota (28-3) vs. No. 9 Temple (20-10)--There’s no way the Golden Gophers can have it as easy as they did Friday against horrendously overmatched Southwest Texas State, which couldn’t go two possessions without giving it away against Minnesota’s pressure defense and lost, 78-46. If the Owls’ young guards can avoid getting rattled, Temple--which stifled Mississippi, 62-40, in the first round--has massive Marc Jackson to score inside and that classic, John Chaney-coached matchup zone which could give the Big Ten champions fits. Minnesota guard Bobby Jackson, the Big Ten player of the year, will have to work his way into the creases for the Golden Gophers to put up more than 60 points.

* No. 4 Clemson (22-9) vs. No. 5 Tulsa (24-9)--Fresh from holding Miami of Ohio’s leading scorer Devin Davis to 13 points in a 68-56 first-round victory, Clemson faces Golden Hurricane shooter Shea Seals, who broke Tulsa’s career scoring record in the 81-52 first-round victory over Boston University. After an incredible 16-1 start--the only loss by 10 to Minnesota in Puerto Rico--lifted Clemson to a No. 2 national ranking, the Tigers skidded into the tournament on a 2-5 free-fall. Forward Greg Buckner, who scored 22 against Miami, carries the Tiger offense, and when he’s not shooting well, they’re in trouble. Tulsa defeated UCLA, Temple and Oklahoma--but lost twice to Utah and to Texas Christian in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
