Esperanza Beats Tustin, Wins Tournament

After giving up two hits and a run in the first inning, Nathan Choate combined with Nick Puoci to hold Tustin hitless as Esperanza defeated the Tillers, 10-1, to win the Newport Elks Tournament Saturday.

Choate struck out seven in six innings and Puoci pitched a flawless seventh for the sixth-ranked Aztecs (4-0).

Anthony Colacion led Esperanza with two hits and three runs scored.

Brandon Pack had a double, sacrifice fly and three runs batted in for the Aztecs.

Tustin drops to 3-1 this season.

In another Newport Elks tournament game:

Mater Dei 11, Capistrano Valey 3--Third-ranked Mater Dei used two home runs and five RBIs from Brett Kay to defeat top-ranked Capistrano Valley in the third-place game. Pat Manning and Rod Perry each had two hits for the Monarchs (3-1).

Rik Currier had two hits for Capistrano Valley (2-2), which lost its second game of the week.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Bolsa Grande 5, Mission Viejo 3--With a runner on first, one out and the tying run at the plate, Gus DeLeon retired the next two batters to record his second save as Bolsa Grande (5-1) won the championship at Costa Mesa High.

Bolsa Grande was keyed by Isaac Gonzalez, who hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to give Bolsa Grande a 5-2 lead.

Sam Baeder (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one unearned) on four hits and three walks. He struck out two for Bolsa Grande.

Costa Mesa 6, Los Amigos 5--Brian Montoya went four for four with a double to lead host Costa Mesa (3-1) to third place.

In the Loara Tournament:

El Dorado 7, Katella 4--J.P. Frid (2-0) gave up four runs on four hits in five innings for El Dorado (5-0), which won the tournament. Greg Posien hit a home run in the seventh to cap a three-run inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Servite 5, La Quinta 4--Servite rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take third place.

Ryan Brown (1-0) of Servite (4-1) entered the top of the seventh with no outs and two on. He got the first batter he faced to hit a grounder, which was thrown home for the out. That left runners on first and third with one out. The next batter hit into a 4-3 double play to end the scoring threat by La Quinta.

Ryan Garko went three for four with a double, a triple, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for Servite. Brown went three for four with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

In the North Orange County Tournament:

Buena Park 6, La Habra 2--Kyle Kelly doubled in two runs and Jesse Rios doubled home Kelly to cap a four-run seventh inning for Buena Park (5-1), which won the tournament for the second consecutive year.

Daniel Flores of Buena Park was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Flores won three games and saved another in a four-game tournament, pitching 12 innings and giving up two runs (one earned).

Cesar Carillo and Richi Pohle of Buena Park were named to the all-tournament team.

In the Glendora baseball tournament:

Sonora 9, El Monte 5--Ryan Voreol was four for four with three RBIs as Sonora defeated El Monte (2-2) for the tournament title. Teammate Brenton Tatum had four hits and two RBIs for the Raiders (4-0).

In the Costa Mesa softball tournament:

Century 8, South Torrance 0--Dawn Lopez pitched a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts as Century (5-0) defeated South Torrance to win the championship.

Lopez, the tournament MVP, also hit a two-run homer, her second this season.

Raylene Salcido had three hits and two RBIs for the Centurions.

Edison 3, Corona del Mar 2--Suzzane Goldstone was two for three with one RBI and a run scored as Edison won third place. Pitcher Hillary Hamilton pitched a five-hitter for the Chargers (4-2).

Megan Hennins had two hits and a run scored for Corona del Mar (6-2).

In the Brea softball tournament:

Brea Olinda 2, Chino Don Lugo 0--Geney Orris pitched a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as Brea Olinda (4-1) took third place.

In nonleague softball:

Foothill 1-3, Woodbridge 0-1 (7, 11)--Foothill’s Lindsay Fossatti won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with a two-run homer as the Knights swept a doubleheader from fourth-ranked Woodbridge (5-2). Fossatti scattered six hits in 11 innings and struck out four to improve to 3-1.

Lauren Schwendeman (4-0) pitched a one-hit shutout for Foothill in the first game. Rosie Gustavson scored the game’s only run for the third-ranked Knights (7-1) on a first-inning passed ball. Gustavson had singled to reach base.

In the Laguna Hills boys’ volleyball tournament:

Claremont 2, Mission Viejo 1--Will Martin was named tournament most valuable player from Claremont, which won the championship match, 15-7, 7-15, 15-11.

The all-tournament team included Will Martin and Scott Denny of Claremont, Gabe Burt and James Murphy of Mission Viejo, Filemon Pinoco of Santa Ana, Matt Komer of Los Alamitos and James Williams of Capistrano Valley Christian.
