Friendship Abroad

Regarding “At Home, Abroad” (Feb. 23): While it is nice to rent a home in Europe, the most enjoyable way to travel is as a guest in a home with your hosts right there with you. And the cost is minuscule compared to renting.

I’ve traveled with a wonderful group known as the Friendship Force. We stay in homes of people for a week, participate in activities with them and have some free time to ourselves. The cost is seldom more than $100 for the week, plus gifts and other entertaining (to express your thanks) to your hosts. But the real crux of this kind of travel is to meet and know local people in that country.

The Friendship Force was initiated with the help of former President Jimmy Carter. It has a Los Angeles chapter that can be reached by calling (818) 348-2808.
