Sydor a Star Among Stars in Victory Over Penguins

Former King defenseman Darryl Sydor ignited a four-goal second period and the Dallas Stars continued their run of home success with a 6-2 victory over the shorthanded Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

Dallas improved to 10-1-1 at Reunion Arena since the all-star break and is 7-1-2 overall in its last 10 games.

The Penguins played without Mario Lemieux, who injured his hip, and Jaromir Jagr, who has a groin injury.

Colorado 4, Detroit 2--Adam Deadmarsh scored one goal on a power play and another with his team shorthanded as the Avalanche rallied for a victory at Denver to clinch the regular-season championship in the Pacific Division. The defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche improved the NHL’s best record to 43-18-9. Detroit, second in the Central Division, dropped to 33-21-15.

Washington 5, Hartford 3--At Landover, Md., Peter Bondra had a goal and an assist during a three-goal first period and the Capitals extended the Whalers’ road winless streak to seven games.

The Capitals are within a point of Hartford and idle Montreal for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto 3, Tampa Bay 1--Goalie Felix Potvin stopped 39 shots and Wendel Clark had a goal and an assist at Tampa Bay as the Maple Leafs ended a five-game winless streak.

Chicago 5, New York Islanders 4--At Chicago, Tony Amonte scored three goals for his fourth career hat trick and the Blackhawks extended their unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2).
