Swim records are supposed to be set toward the end of the season when athletes gain strength after tapering off workouts. But Sutanto, who is from Indonesia, couldn’t wait. He set the Golden West record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1 minute 52.17 seconds. His time was almost 1 1/2 seconds faster than the previous mark. Sutanto also won the 200- and 400-individual medley races.

* Saddleback, freshman. He shot a one-under 70 at Cypress Golf Club and added a two-over 73 at Rio Hondo Country Club as defending state champion Saddleback won twice.
