New Mapping System Shows Velocity of Shaking in Quake
Seismologists produced this map showing shaking velocities of Tuesday’s magnitude 5.4 temblor 12 miles northeast of Barstow. The contours show how fast the earth moved, in centimeters per second, in various areas of Southern California.
It is the first such map produced for a sizable quake under the new TriNet system of seismographic stations operated by Caltech, the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Division of Mines and Geology. Information is available at Web site https://www-socal.wr.usgs.gov/. The top velocity Tuesday was 5.5 centimeters, or a little more than two inches, per second. By contrast, the top velocity in the 1994 Northridge quake was 183 centimeters, or about 6 feet, per second.
