Ward Connerly

Peter H. King’s slam against UC Regent Ward Connerly is just incredible (March 16). Connerly is surely one of the honorable, genuine democrats in American history. His motivations are transparent to any objective person. He is devoted, and is willing to take on hate from today’s anti-democratic forces, who mostly come from the left. His ideas come straight from the Declaration of Independence, and the wording of the California Civil Rights Initiative is copied from the 1964 Civil Rights Act. So where is the mystery? Why are his motives questioned?

If King really likes racially motivated job discrimination, he should volunteer his own job first. I’m sure there is a deserving politically correct candidate just waiting in the wings.

In “Drive-By Victims of DNC Greed” (Opinion, March 16), Don Nakanishi of UCLA laments the fact that the Democratic National Committee “identified and audited only Asian-surname contributors on their citizenship status” during fallout from the recent campaign donation scandals.

In the same issue, King castigates Connerly for advocating the hiding of ethnic identity information (including names) as part of the effort to completely level the playing field for all applicants in the UC admissions process to assure that achievements based on attributes other than race, religion or gender are at the forefront of the admissions process.

Perhaps if King had read Nakanishi’s article before writing his own, he might have come to quite a different conclusion.
