Schools to Monitor Weather for KNBC

Share

Several local schools were recently selected by KNBC-Channel 4 in Los Angeles to participate in a weather project as a local update center.

The six schools were among 50 in Southern California chosen to receive an AWS (Automated Weather Source) WeatherNet Sensor Unit and corresponding computer software. More than 800 schools applied for the program.

“We feel very privileged to have been chosen,” said Val Parkin, assistant principal at Clarence Lobo Elementary School in San Clemente. “I think it’s a neat program.”

The purpose of the weather project is to provide both schools and the television station with access to up-to-date weather information. With the sensing equipment at the schools, KNBC will be able to gather accurate weather figures from spots throughout Orange County. Teachers may use the technology and weather figures in lesson plans, from math and science to geography and language arts.

El Toro High School in Lake Forest, James Irvine Intermediate School in Garden Grove, Mariners Elementary School in Newport Beach, Richman Elementary School in Fullerton and University Park Elementary School in Irvine were also selected for the program.

The weather system is free to the participants, but the schools will be responsible for installing the equipment, which is expected to arrive sometime this spring.
