PJ Shows P.J. the Big Money

Undefeated junior-middleweight P.J. Goossen of Palmdale signed a three-year contract with Santa Ana-based PJ Promotions on Friday that could net the boxer up to a million dollars.

The contract calls for at least four fights in 1997, the first in April, and includes television guarantees, according to Pat Goossen, P.J.’s trainer and father. They hope to land a title fight in 1998.

Goossen, 26, is 17-0 with 11 knockouts. He last fought in June when he beat Greg Lonon to retain the International Boxing Organization title he has since relinquished.

Junior-welterweight Chuck Goossen, 21, P.J.’s brother who is 7-2 with six knockouts, also signed with PJ Promotions.

PJ Promotions, a subsidiary of World Wide Web Casinos Inc., is relatively new to the fight game.

Taking a break: UCLA freshman Kim Mortensen, Track & Field News magazine’s 1996 girl athlete of the year as a Thousand Oaks High senior, is going to use her redshirt year this track season.

Mortensen, who set a girls’ national high school record of 9:48.59 in the 3,200 meters last year, said she hoped to use the time off from competition to add muscle to her 5-foot-3 frame.

“I just need more of a defense, or you could call it a cushion, against injuries,” she said. “I didn’t give myself much of a [break] between high school and college.”

Mortensen suffered a hamstring injury during her freshman cross-country season, leading to a 27th-place finish in the District VIII championships.

Running Utes: Laura Janke and Sara Leibowitz of Simi Valley were named to the California Youth Soccer Assn. South State under-15 Olympic development team.

Also on the team are Sarah Deckers of Canyon Country and Kim Taylor of Woodland Hills.
