George Washington Upsets Carolina

In the end, top-seeded North Carolina couldn’t rely on good looks, and fell to George Washington, 55-46, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I East Regional.

“We had some good looks at the basket, but it goes back to putting the basketball in,” said Marion Jones of North Carolina (29-3), who was held to eight points--10 below her average. Jones was a freshman star in 1994 when North Carolina last won the national championship.

Tajama Abraham, George Washington’s all-time leading scorer, had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Colonials (28-5) reached the final eight for the first time. The Colonials became the first Atlantic 10 team to make the final eight since 1986.

Notre Dame 87, Alabama 71--Beth Morgan scored a career-high 36 points and Notre Dame’s 22-0 run in the second half to beat second-seeded Alabama the East Regional. Morgan scored 11 copnsecutive points as Notre Dame (30-6) rallied from nine points down to tie the score, 51-51. After Alabama (25-7) went ahead 56-53, the Irish held the Crimson Tide scoreless for more than six minutes.

Florida 71, Louisiana Tech 57--Murriel Page had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Florida (24-8) used a fast start to beat Louisiana Tech at West Lafayette. Louisiana Tech (31-4) shot only 33 percent from the field and finished with its lowest point total of the season. Florida didn’t allow a field goal for the first seven minutes.

Old Dominion 62, Louisiana State 49--Old Dominion (32-1) won its 31st consecutive game by overcoming its worst shooting performance of the season to beat Louisiana State at West Lafayette. Ol Dominion made up for its lack of offense with strong rebounding and defense that held the Lady Tigers without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the first half.
