Canyons Is Fit for a Tie After Ventura Wins, 6-3

Dustin Tubb gave up three hits and one earned run over 6 2/3 innings, and Ventura College downed Canyons, 6-3, Saturday in a Western State Conference interdivisional baseball game at Ventura.

Marc Fallini recorded his first save after allowing one hit in two innings for the Pirates (15-10, 4-7 in conference play).

Andy Super had a double and triple for Ventura and Jeff Chan hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Pirates ahead, 4-0.

Canyons (18-7, 8-3) is tied with Glendale for first place in the WSC Southern Division.

In other baseball games:

Glendale 9, Santa Barbara 1--Jared Sandler pitched a seven-hitter for Glendale in a WSC interdivisional game at Santa Barbara.

The victory pulled Glendale (19-8, 8-3) into a first-place tie with Canyons in the WSC Southern Division.

Freddy Sanchez had four hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for Glendale. Brett Niles had two hits and two runs batted in.

Santa Barbara (10-12, 3-8) is last in the WSC Northern Division.

Oxnard 14, Pierce 2--Mike Muller had two hits, including a grand slam, and Brent Egan and Shawn Fossen each had three hits for the Condors (12-13, 5-6) in a WSC interdivisional game at Oxnard.

Daniel Martinez (3-4) of Oxnard allowed four hits over seven innings, striking out six.

Moorpark 9, Bakersfield 5--Nick Lawson had two hits and drove in three runs and Andy Huisenga had two hits and two RBIs for Moorpark (10-17, 5-6) in a WSC interdivisional game at Moorpark.

Brandon Michaels had two hits and sophomore left-hander Mike Vasquez (2-1) pitched a complete game for the Raiders. He scattered nine hits, struck out two and walked six.

Cal Lutheran 14, Eastern Connecticut 11--Anthony Olden’s three-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Kingsmen (17-5) the lead for good in a pool-play game of the California Invitational tournament at the University of La Verne.

The Warriors (4-2) built a 4-3 lead after four innings before Olden’s home run put Cal Lutheran ahead, 6-4.

Cal Lutheran’s Brad Smith hit a three-run home run in the ninth.

Cal Lutheran, which finished first in its pool, faces Pacific Lutheran in a semifinal game today.

Cal Lutheran 22, Pomona-Pitzer 6--In an earlier pool-play game, Anthony Olden, Adam Rauch and Mike Young each had three hits for the Kingsmen.

Olden had two home runs, his fifth and sixth of the year.

Reliever Craig Arnold (2-0) pitched four hitless innings to earn the victory.

SOFTBALL

Arizona 1, Cal State Northridge 0--The Matadors had a chance to upset the defending national champion in a quarterfinal game of the Cal State Fullerton tournament, but lost on a freak play in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Brandi Shriver of Arizona (30-0) was awarded home plate when catcher Jennifer Parker interfered with her during a rundown between home and third base with one out.

The Matadors (14-12-2) had five hits off former Hoover High standout Nancy Evans (16-0). They loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth but could not score.

Northridge’s Tara Glaister (8-8) allowed eight hits.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, 15-13, 9-15, 15-4, 13-15, 15-13--Kevin Barnett had 38 kills for Pepperdine (14-4) in a nonconference match at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (12-7).

George Roumain added 24 kills for the Waves, and Kurt Nelson had 76 assists and 13 digs.
