School Funding Ruled Unlawful

Ohio’s system of funding public schools, in which rich districts spend far more per student than poorer districts, is unconstitutional, the state Supreme Court declared. The 4-3 ruling, handed down in Columbus, came in a 1991 lawsuit filed by a coalition representing most of the state’s school districts. Differences in property values and wealth result in annual per-pupil spending ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per student.
